According to a recent White House Press Release, “Tire Safety Awareness Month” runs from December 9 to January 9, 2015. The Department of Transportation is partnering with tire manufacturers, fuel distributors, tire retailers, and NASCAR to help minimize tire-related accidents and save on fuel costs.
An article at rubbernews.com states that tire manufacturers are offering special rates and programs to their customers. Bridgestone Americas will offer free tire inspections at over 2,200 Bridgestone retail stores; Goodyear will offer tire care education on its website and free inflation pressure services at its more than 600 company-owned retail stores; while Cooper will provide a tire safety kit to those who buy Cooper tires.
According to the White House, there are approximately 11,000 tire related automobile crashes each year. Most of these accidents can be prevented by properly maintaining tires. As the roads become hazardous during these wet winter months, make sure you check and understand tire complaints and recalls, labels, and tire life-span. The Department of Transportation recommends checking tire pressure, tread, balance, alignment, and rotation before hitting the road.
