Several industry trade groups for operators of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have partnered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on a safety campaign as a result of increased accidents due to UAV crashes.

The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, the Small UAV Coalition, and the Academy of Model Aeronautics have teamed up with the FAA to launch www.knowbeforeyoufly.com a website dedicated to FAA regulations and tips on how to fly unmanned aircraft safely.

UAVs both large and small were popular Christmas gifts this year and the number of reported sightings of UAVs, especially near airports and manned aircraft, has skyrocketed. According to an administrator with the FAA: “They think they just bought something fun that they just want to fly around. They don’t for a moment think,’I’m entering the national airspace system.’

If you inadvertently cause an accident or crash your UAV, you could be found liable for damages. Use common sense when operating a UAV. Stay away from airports, urban environments, power lines, telephone poles, and residential neighborhoods. Be smart when flying!
