The Department of Transportation released new data showing a 2.5 percent decline in deaths caused by drunk drivers in 2013. Despite the decrease, 2013 saw 10,076 people killed in accidents involving a drunk driver.
In response to this drunk driving epidemic the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released a new app called “SaferRide” that helps users call taxis or a friend and provides location information to help get home safely. The app is free to download, simple to use, and is available for both iOS and Android.
The “SaferRide’ app is just a small part of the Department’s yearly crackdown on drunk drivers. In addition to the app, the DoT has an 8 million dollar national advertising campaign aimed at protecting the public and getting drunk drivers off the road.
Don’t be selfish this holiday season by driving after drinking. Call a cab, a friend, or one of the many ride sharing services available.
