Since 1973, the group W.A.T.CH. (World Against Toys Causing Harm) has released its annual “10 Worst Toys” detailing those toys that have the potential to cause childhood injuries. All of these toys are sold at major retailers like Target, Walmart, Toys R US, and Amazon.
Some toys that made W.A.T.C.H’s list include:
-‘Air Storm Firetek Bow’ manufactured by Zing is a ‘light-up power’ bow and arrow set with arrows designed to fly up to 145 feet.
-‘Ziggle’ manufactured by Radio Flyer is a small 4 wheeled cycle approximately 8 inches off the round. According to W.A.T.C.H., despite a warning to wear a helmet and safety gear whenever riding, the child featured on the cover of the box is wearing no protection.
-‘Bottle Rocket Party’ by Norman & Globus, Inc., is a kit for bottle rockets fueled by vinegar and baking soda. The package mentions that “shooting off bottle rockets is a major event.” Despite warnings of potential harm if misused, no safety goggles are supplied with the product.
-‘True Legends Orc Battle Hammer’ by Toys R US is a hard plastic “Battle Hammer” that is approximately 2 feet in length. W.A.T.C.H. reports that 3 year old children are encouraged to ‘play the part of a Savage Orc.’ No warnings are featured on the packaging.
When shopping for Christmas gifts for loved ones this year, especially if the recipient is a small child, be certain to check for recalls and avoid toys that are flammable, have small breakable pieces, or feature cords or rope. A little common sense goes a long way.
