This week’s Amtrak train and the unfortunate fact that the train engineer does not remember speeding being an issue prior to the crash, http://www.cnn.com/2015/05/14/us/philadelphia-amtrak-train-derailment/ can hopefully accelerate the incorporation of a new technological program called Positive Train Control. This program is scheduled to be up and running by December 2015. Positive train control is a system that combines GPS, wireless radio and computers to monitor trains and stop them from colliding, derailing or speeding. http://www.cnn.com/2015/05/13/us/philadelphia-amtrak-crash-positive-train-control/index.html While the cause of the accident is still being investigated, it has already been concluded that the train engineer was travelling twice the speed limit of 50mph for that curve. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_speed_limits_in_the_United_States.
